A warehouse is how Big Ambitions businesses stop being hand-fed. Instead of you (or an employee) carrying boxes from wholesalers to every store, a warehouse buys in bulk, stores stock on racks, and dispatches delivery drivers to restock your businesses automatically. It is the mid-game system that turns a portfolio of stores into an actual supply chain — and it comes with a handful of rules that are not obvious until you have stared at a stuck delivery.

Building sizes and driver bays
Warehouses come in lettered size classes, and the one spec that matters most is not floor area — it is delivery vehicle slots. H1, H2 and H3 warehouses have a slot for one delivery vehicle. The bigger classes — I1, I2, I3, and the P1–P3 and Q1–Q3 series — have slots for two. Each slot supports one delivery driver and one truck, so the size class literally caps how much restocking you can move per day.
That makes size selection a logistics decision rather than a real-estate one. A warehouse serving one or two nearby stores fits comfortably in an H-class building with a single driver. A warehouse feeding a district — or covering stores on both sides of Manhattan — wants the two-bay classes, or two warehouses, because one truck can only be in one traffic jam at a time.
Since Early Access 0.9, the Industry City industrial area has offered the larger warehouse buildings, and it is where the game's heaviest logistics operations naturally live. The area arrived alongside the product progression system that pushed players toward bulk supply — meaning the map, the rules and the buildings were all designed to make warehouses the middle of your empire.
Storage: pallet racks and the free-shelf-space rule
Inside the building, storage is built from pallet racks, and the numbers are friendlier than most players expect: a rack holds around 60 item slots, and racks can be placed without clearance for access — one rack directly in front of another still works, since the simulation cares about slots rather than shelf reach. That makes warehouse layout one of the few places in Big Ambitions where density is basically free.
The rule that actually bites: deliveries require free shelf space. If your racks are full, incoming deliveries cannot be received — boxes may end up on the floor, but the automated restocking loop depends on racks having room. In practice this means auditing capacity whenever you add a store: the new shop's stock has to live somewhere, and "somewhere" is always a specific rack slot in a specific warehouse.
Why warehouses exist at all: the wholesale squeeze
Understanding the design intent helps you time the investment. Early in a run, buying stock by hand from wholesalers works fine, and the game deliberately lets it work — right up until the product progression system (added in Early Access 0.9) tightens the screws. Wholesale purchases gained limits, shortages and backorders became normal, and the intended answer to "my stores cannot reliably get stock" became warehousing and distribution rather than more driving.
That context explains the community's standard advice to follow the campaign's warehouse introduction rather than improvising one early. A warehouse before you have multiple stores is overhead; a warehouse when wholesale limits are capping three stores' shelves is the best money in the game. The squeeze is the signal — and Industry City's bigger buildings are the answer the roadmap shipped alongside it.
Staffing: drivers and the logistics manager
Two roles keep a warehouse running. Delivery drivers are the legs — one per vehicle slot, moving stock from the warehouse to your businesses. A small operation needs a single driver; a two-bay building wants two, and understaffing a second bay is the same as not having it. The drivers use in-game vehicles on real streets, which is why distance and traffic shape how many stores one warehouse can realistically serve.
The brain of the operation is the logistics manager, an employee role that oversees warehouse inventory and controls deliveries to your stores. With one in place, restocking becomes a managed pipeline instead of a chore you remember at midnight — which is the entire point of the building. The campaign introduces this flow properly when it walks you through your first warehouse, and it is worth following that tutorial rather than improvising.
When deliveries silently stop
Three failure modes account for almost every "my store isn't getting restocked" report. First: no free shelf space at the warehouse, so incoming goods cannot be received — fix by adding racks or selling down. Second: no available driver or vehicle at the moment the delivery was scheduled — check that every bay has a driver on shift. Third: the destination store's own shelves are full, so the driver has nowhere to put the stock when it arrives.

When to build your first warehouse
The timing signal is simple: when manual restocking runs are eating your character's days, or when wholesale limits are capping your stores' stock, the warehouse is the designed answer. Start with an H-class building near your store cluster, one driver, a logistics manager, and racks sized for what your stores actually sell in a week — then scale with your empire rather than ahead of it.
Pallet rack math in practice
Capacity planning sounds abstract until you put numbers on it. A pallet rack holds around sixty item slots and stacks without clearance, so a single H-class warehouse fit for one driver can hold a surprising number of racks — the real constraint is not floor space but how many slots your stores burn per week. Count what each connected store sells weekly, add roughly a quarter as buffer, and buy racks until the total clears that number.
Then re-run the math every time you connect a new store, because the free-shelf-space rule means one new shop can push a previously comfortable warehouse over its limit — and the symptom shows up as failed deliveries at the far end of your supply line rather than as a warning at the warehouse itself.
