How production works: recipes first, machines second

Every manufacturable product in the game has a recipe, and the recipe determines your entire build. That headcount converts directly into the factory's real economics. Wages are the factory's dominant recurring cost, which is why a line that looks profitable per-unit can still lose money per-day. Model your labor before you build your second line, not after — and remember the happiness system applies to factory workers like everyone else you employ.

The balance debate: are factories even worth it?

Here is the honest part: the community has not agreed that factories pay. Critical threads describe production buildings that output too little — one player's full-size factory struggling to sustain a single jewelry store's demand — and scaling discussions where players conclude they need three or four factories just to keep one raw material flowing. Others point to the cheap smartphone line as proof the system works. Both camps are looking at real gameplay; the difference is which products they chose and when.

The reason the debate exists is structural. The product progression system from Early Access 0.9 deliberately restricted wholesale purchasing and introduced shortages and backorders, making self-production the designed solution to supply problems. Factories are therefore best judged as supply insurance and margin control for businesses with heavy, predictable demand — not as standalone profit generators you can point at anything.

A sane first factory

If you build one anyway, build small and boring. Pick one product your own stores already buy in volume, check its recipe, and size the factory to exactly that demand rather than to the building's maximum capacity. Fitting the factory into your supply chain

A factory should never be a standalone business — it earns its keep inside a pipeline. Upstream, it draws raw materials through your warehouse and delivery network; downstream, its output feeds the stores that were already buying those goods from wholesalers. The production progression system changed the wholesale rules precisely so this pipeline matters: when shelves run short and backorders appear, the factories that exist quietly keep their own stores stocked while competitors wait on imports.

Setting that up well is mostly sequencing. Fix the chain, and the factory resumes being what it should have been from day one: a quiet, machinery-flavored answer to the question of who supplies your empire.

Choosing your first product

Product choice is where new factory owners lose the most money, so apply three filters before committing machines. One: your own stores must already consume it in volume — a factory feeding real, measured demand cannot strand you with inventory. Two: the recipe's machine chain should be short; the community's smartphone example became famous precisely because a three-machine line under a million dollars is the cheapest industrial education available. Three: the raw materials should be obtainable at scale, since the product progression system limits wholesale purchases and a starved line is a pure wage drain.

If a candidate product fails any of the three filters, park it. The factories that get praised in the community are rarely the ambitious ones — they are the boring, right-sized lines that quietly replaced a wholesaler invoice, month after month.
